I'm not sure if this is the only problem, but the trader always wants to make a significant profit. It just wasn't profitable enough for his tastes. The part where he says he won't trade at a loss typically means that he didn't like the deal you offered him. Merchants can arrive without cart access as you have seen but it means they only have pack animals who can carry much less weight than the carts. I used the option, and the ENTIRE MAP was covered in No Wagon Access red X's, except for a 4x4 square next to my depot that says Wagon Access, and another 4x4 square that mostly covers my depot that is marked Inaccessible Depot. Instead, it revealed that the merchants shouldn't have been able to get to the depot at all. I saw the "D Depot access" button on the menu and thought it might help. I've gotten trade goods to the depot, I can get into the trade interface, but when it says there's still 'available weight' and I try to trade, the merchant says the topic title, and when it says 'excess weight,' he says that he won't trade at a loss. I've recently gotten into dwarf fortress (though the learning curve doesn't seem quite as steep as people insinuate), and so far I've figured out things without too much trouble. I never sell any Artifacts/Legendary items. I'll sell jewels and jewelry, as well, but clean out all my other unwanted items, first. If not, I give other races the cheap copper and iron stuff looted off of gobbies and the like if I decide to sell them such things. I sell off junk I don't want, then start selling cut gems, maybe some extra armor and weapons if its a Dwarven civilization. Eventually, though, your use stabilizes and you start to accumulate stockpiles as what you didn't use starts to overlap with Caravan deliveries. If you have the space for it, buying things you need all at one pop in large amounts is awesome. I'll still buy wood, too, at 200 dorfs with all steel and getting ready to go dig deep. Books are probably the thing you'll really want to help quickly stock up your Library. And, there's some other things, like Seeds you really want/need or Books. I doubt you'd be buying enough steel weapons/armor to outfit one dwarf even if they had it that early in gameplay.Ī big influx of silk, wools, cloth, leather, sets off a nice rush of clothing crafting if I've run low.Ĭonvenience items? Sure, if you have something to trade. And, if you "must," it's likely you can already make what you could afford to buy. Don't buy clothing, armor, weapons, etc unless you absolutely must. You want your own crafters leveling up, not someone else's. IMO, don't buy crafted items that you can produce yourself, in bulk. And, of those, I only buy products like wood, products involving animals, plants, cloth, or food. On reflection, a short list - What do I buy? Consumables. (Stone/Clay Pots are heavy and you don't want to spend your iron making bins.) You've got to make beds and it's best to use wood for bins and barrels and you need all of those in big supply when you're setting up. Starting off a fortress when you're low on wood is tough. I just started out with not very many trees on the map, so I focused on trading for wood. Paying attention to what makes your Dorfs happy is a good thing to base decisions on. should i just trade for whatever or food or bags or anything i don't have that my dwarfs need or look for stuff that seems rare? seems it possible to craft almost anything you can trade for or should i look for something like 'bobcat leather items' or whatever floats my boat? seems its good idea get lots of things that make our dwarfs enjoy life or survive.
